How do bandages help prevent infection?
Band-Aids and such might protect against big things, like mud or contact with poison ivy or something, but because they have “breathing holes” in the band-aid strap, and because it isn’t absolutely connected to your skin, how does it actually prevent germs and microscopic dangers from entering whatever wound is being bandaged?
Bandages cover the skin keeping out possible infection just like the skin normally would. Noesporin has partnered with Johnson and Johnson to release bandages with neosporin impregnated in the pad. The ointment acts as an antibiotic and another covering over the skin.
The second purpose of a bandage is to cushion the wound against another injury. That is what the pad is for. The air holes are only in prepared bandaged, they are not in cloth bandages like you would use for burns. However in both cases the membrane is breathable so the skin can heal, sweat can evaporate and air can still circulate over it; all of these are important to help the wound heal.
If you fell in mud and soaked the bandage then the water possibly carrying bacteria would penetrate the wound and require it to be cleaned and re-bandaged or you would risk infection.
If you use a membrane that is sealed then the skin will rot and not heal properly. It needs to be exposed to air to start the healing process, otherwise the body will consider the wound to be sealed and the wound won’t heal.
The biggest danger of 3rd degree (full thickness) burns is that the skin is destroyed, puckered and exposed. Normally the person suffers an infection and dies unless the skin is protected, this is why the technique of skin grafts has become so important in treating people with bad burns and why a person who has suffered burns over 90% of their body is not expected to survive. They may make it to the hospital, but between the chance of infection and the raw pain from the exposed nerves survival isn’t likely.
