Effective Therapy For Plantar Fasciitis Can be Achieved with Orthotics

According to a study conducted by the American Podiatric Medical Association, an amazing 73 percent of people polled revealed that they are dealing with pain in their feet.  Why have foot ailments and pain become so commonplace in the examination room?  For many people, this problem can be caused by one of the following: the types of shoes they wear , what activities they participate in, or how their feet are formed.  The use of  uncomfortable shoes can make existing problems even worse.  Athletes are another group who are mostly-affected people who suffer from pain in their feet.   Factors such as fallen arches,  excess pronation, and poor protection can all be contributing factors to lower extremity pain. Genetics can contribute to foot-related issues because they dictate how a person’s feet are formed. This can increase the risk of someone having pain issues with their feet.

The Mechanics of the Foot

It is clear that feet overpronation  can cause can make running or walking painful because the foot rotates inward. The foot is responsible for balance, stability, and bears the weight of the body. The areas heel, arch, tarsals and metatarsals provide the body with what it needs to perform optimally. The arch offers stability by the following structures: the tendons, ligaments, and muscles. This delicate balance can be interrupted by high arches or fallen arches, which can cause the foot to rotate strangely. With high arches, the weight of the body is strangely emphasized on the outside perimeter of the foot , a condition known as over-supination. Conversely, overpronation takes place with low arches because the weight of the body is concentrated on the inside of the foot, forcing the feet to roll toward the inside .

Serious Foot Issues Occur with Over-Pronation

A brief evaluation to see if flat feet or high arches are an issue is to find a good area where a foot print can be made, such as on cement. Dip one foot in cold water and then stand normally for a few seconds. Then, pick the foot up and look at the mark that the foot leaves.  A foot with excess pronation will leave a total print showing the entire surface area of the bottom of the foot. A high arch will leave just a part of the ball of the foot’s, outer portion, and heel of the foot.  Either of these arch dysfunctions can contribute to bony growths in the heel, because the foot takes constant pressure on points that were not intended to have impact.

Orthotics Provide Immediate Relief for Flat Feet

Those who have flat feet, heel spurs, or who need treatment for plantar fasciitis can get relief for their pain if they use orthotics.  They provide the needed support to remedy the weakened areas in the arch of the foot.  They also offer cushioning in areas where constant pressure occurs, such as in the heel or ball of the foot.   Orthotics are available in several sizes and styles and are constructed to meet the needs of athletes, high-heel wearers, and everyone in between.
