Selecting and Caring for Sticky Yoga Mats

Yoga has become more popular over recent years, and one reason could be that it doesn’t require any special equipment. All you really need to do yoga is comfortable workout clothes and one of the many eco friendly yoga mats available today. With so many affordable yoga mats available, it can be difficult to find the one that is right for you. Why? Because the relationship that you develop with your mat can be much more significant than that of other types of fitness equipment. In fact, you and that mat may be spending quite a bit of time together, which is why you want one that will look and feel right time after time.

Types of Yoga Mats

You’ll find there are a cotton yoga mats available in a variety of hues and materials. One commonality you’ll find among yoga mats is that they have a sticky surface that enables you to safely perform poses. The yoga mats stick to the floor once they have been dampened with water or sweat. From there, you can select a mat that will work best for the type of yoga that you plan to do. You can either ask your yoga instructor which the best mat is, or you can do some research online. The next step will be to try out a few yoga mats to see which ones feel the best to you. Even selecting the right mat color is important. You’ll be spending a lot of time looking at your mat, and you want to choose something that inspires energy or calm. It will be easier if it is a color that you find attractive.

Caring for your Mat

It’s important to break in yoga mats before you start using them, and then clean them periodically once you are. Your yoga mat may come with instructions. Follow any directions that came with your mat closely. If you want to wash your mat in the washing machine, this generally works best with machines that are not top loaders, since the spin action of these machines can damage the mat. Putting your mat in the dryer can damage its sticky surface, so this should also be avoided. The best option is just to let your mat air dry, away from direct sunlight. If you don’t have time to let it air dry, you can try drying it on the lowest heat setting on your dryer for ten minutes.

Quality yoga mats can last for years when they are cared for properly. Choose a material and color that you like, and you will get plenty of good use out of your yoga mat.
