metatarsal fractures are known as fractures of long bones. As a long bone, treatment of these fractures depends on the location and extent of fracture damage to the bone and the neurovascular supply to the bone.
The treatment of these fractures should be individualized based on health status patients, the external needs, and clinical presentation.
fifth metatarsal fractures are usually treated as the metatarsal other fractures. Due to the increasing weight bearing load of the first and fifth metatarsals, precautions must be taken to ensure good alignment, compression fracture fragment (s) and immobilization to allow adequate bone healing.
There are four (4) types of fractures 5 ยบ metatarsal. Head and neck fractures, the shaft, avulsion, and one type of fracture known as "split Jones."
Jones fracture is a break in the fifth metatarsal that occurs on the axis between the middle portion of the bone and the back or base of the metatarsal. This should not be confused with an "avulsion fracture" where a small piece of bone breaks due to the attraction of a ligament or tendon. This type of injury is usually caused by "investment" or rolling the ankle.
Torg classification system is commonly used by doctors to determine treatment based on radiological findings. Because the high rate of nonunion in these fractures (caused by the interruption of blood supply in the region of the fractured metatarsal), this classification system allows appropriate treatment based on the severity of the fracture line.
Torg system is divided into three types of fractures. Type I and II are usually treated Conservatives with a cam walker or no weight bearing cast for 6-8 weeks. It is followed with progressive weight bearing in a boot high or low. Some fractures Type II may require surgery, depending on the patient and the level of activity (athlete). Type III fractures are fractures generally displaced (separated) and must be treated surgically, with fasteners to hold the two bones together. It is followed, with a cast bearing no weight or cam walker.
Monitoring X-rays are usually taken after the fracture to determine the stage of fracture healing.
Whatever treatment options are prescribed by your doctor, it is important that the patient follow instructions exactly. The unions are not very frequent in this type of fracture and may result months or years of pain, swelling and disability.
